History of the competition

The Outstanding CSR of the Year competition started in 1991 to honor customer service representatives and account managers who have made significant contributions to the insurance and risk management industry. The competition is sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Service Representatives (CISR) and the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC)—proud member organizations of The National Alliance.

We encourage you to nominate your best customer service representatives and account managers to compete for the Outstanding CSR of the Year award. The competition is open to any insurance customer service representatives or candidates primarily responsible for customer service regardless of affiliation or professional designation. Candidates interested in participating in the competition may also nominate themselves.

Essay

 Please submit a 500 to 1000- word essay on the following topic:

“Given changes in technology, the consolidation of agencies and societal influences, discuss four ways your clients’ expectations have changed in the last 5 years and the two most important changes you expect to see in customer service in the next 5 years?”

How does it work?

*Individuals who nominate the national winner receive a $1000 cash award.

Nominees compete at state level to become one of five finalists.

2019 National Winner

Ms. Mary Katherine Henderson, CIC, is the 
2019 National Outstanding CSR of the Year

Ms. Henderson receives a $2,000 cash award, a gold and diamond lapel pin, and her name inscribed on a permanent sculpture display at The National Alliance headquarters in Austin, Texas. Her employer, Insurance Center Inc. (Little Rock, AR), receives a scholarship for any National Alliance Program.

Ms. Henderson was chosen from a highly competitive pool of 38 state winners by the Society of Certified Insurance Services Representatives (CISR) and the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC). Along with the four national finalists, Ms. Henderson was chosen for her committed participation in the insurance community as well as the impact and creativity of her essay in response to the topic: “Many agencies recognize the professionalism and knowledge of Account Managers and CSRs who successfully weave sales into their day-to-day responsibilities. Please summarize the sales training (if any) you’ve received from your agency or company and discuss what you believe are the three (3) most effective sales techniques or tools that make you a better Account Manager/CSR?”

Her essay delighted the judges’ panel because of its positive and practical message. Ms. Henderson writes, “In a world that seems to focus on getting more for less, I pride myself on trying to provide an outstanding insurance experience at an affordable price. While I have never considered myself a salesman, I know that in my role as account manager, I constantly use sales techniques in all of my day to day interactions. Through my positive attitude, my effective communication skills, and my product knowledge, I will continue to help my agency grown one sale at a time!”
